Astrology for beginners
A welcoming starting point for understanding your birth chart, zodiac signs, and the sky’s moving pieces.
How to read a birth chart
A birth chart is a map of celestial positions for a particular time and place. Planets describe symbolic themes, zodiac signs describe styles of expression, and houses describe areas of life in an astrological tradition.
Start with your Sun, Moon, and ascendant. Then look at Mercury, Venus, and Mars. Aspects describe angular relationships between planets: conjunctions place them near each other; oppositions place them across the chart. A chart interpretation considers the whole pattern, rather than a single placement.
Whole-sign houses assign the entire rising sign to the first house and continue through the zodiac. Other house systems can give different house assignments. Astrojelly labels its whole-sign method so you can compare like with like.
Read one placement, then make it personal.
- Find the planet. Start with your Sun for a familiar entry point.
- Notice the sign. Read its traditional themes as possibilities to reflect on, not instructions you must follow.
- Add the house. With a known birth time, the whole-sign house adds a symbolic area of life.
- Ask one useful question. What feels familiar, what feels different, and what would you like to explore?
For example, a Sun placement in a fire sign might invite a question about enthusiasm or initiative. It does not prove that you are always outgoing. Your experiences, choices and relationships deserve more room than any label.
Keep a note of the birth time, timezone, zodiac and house system. When another calculator disagrees, compare those settings before comparing interpretations.
Try the steps with your own birth chart ↗Sun sign, Moon sign, and rising sign
The Sun sign is the sign containing the Sun’s ecliptic longitude at birth. It is traditionally associated with identity and self-expression. The Moon sign is traditionally linked to emotional habits and comfort. The rising sign is the zodiac sign crossing the eastern horizon at that instant.
Your rising sign needs an accurate time and location. The Moon moves enough that a date alone may be insufficient near a boundary. Popular zodiac date lists are convenient approximations; the Sun’s exact ingress time varies from year to year.
What is Mercury retrograde?
Retrograde motion means a planet’s apparent geocentric longitude is decreasing. The planet does not physically reverse its orbit. The effect comes from our moving viewpoint on Earth.
In astrology, Mercury retrograde is often treated as a prompt to review communication, plans, and routines. It does not establish that technology failures or relationship problems will occur. Astrojelly’s retrograde tool compares positions around your selected instant; very near a station, a tiny calculated speed should be treated cautiously.
Western vs. Vedic astrology
Western astrology commonly uses the tropical zodiac, aligned with the equinoxes. Vedic astrology commonly uses a sidereal zodiac, adjusted by an ayanamsa. Multiple ayanamsas exist, so two sidereal tools can legitimately differ if their conventions differ.
A complete professional Vedic suite needs a validated ayanamsa, node model, divisional-chart rules, dasha conventions, and location-specific sunrise calculations. Our sidereal exploratory tools use an approximation and should not be mistaken for a certified Kundli service.
What can zodiac compatibility tell you?
Sun-sign matching is a small part of traditional relationship astrology. Synastry compares planetary placements in two charts. Astrojelly lists major cross-chart aspects with their angular orbs instead of assigning a fabricated percentage to a relationship.
Kindness, communication, trust, and shared choices matter in real relationships. No chart determines whether two people should date, marry, or separate.
Moon phases and Moon signs answer different questions.
A Moon sign is a zodiac placement. A Moon phase describes the changing view of the Moon's sunlit side from Earth. A full Moon is a phase, not a thirteenth zodiac sign. Explore exact new and full Moon times in the lunar calendar, and your birth Moon placement in the Moon sign tool.

How to start reading your birth chart
No cosmic vocabulary test at the door. Begin with your big three: Sun, Moon and ascendant. Next, look at planets by sign and house before exploring aspects. Keep the zodiac and house system consistent when comparing charts. Learn the vocabulary first; a chart is not a scientifically established prediction.
What does Mercury retrograde mean?
Retrograde describes a planet appearing to move backward against the zodiac from Earth's viewpoint. The planet does not reverse its orbit. Traditional interpretations connect Mercury with communication, but retrograde is not proof that a specific event will happen.
