Birth Chart Compatibility: How to Read Synastry Beyond Sun Signs

By Astrojelly · Updated October 12, 2026

You like someone, discover their zodiac sign, and immediately find a list declaring you a perfect match—or a cosmic disaster. That is a lot of responsibility for two Sun signs. Birth chart compatibility offers a broader symbolic comparison, but it still cannot decide whether a relationship will work.

This guide explains synastry, the information needed for a comparison, and how to read cross-chart aspects without turning them into a love score. Bring curiosity, a willingness to ask real questions, and enough room for two actual people to be more interesting than two labels.

Sun sign compatibility versus a synastry chart

A Sun sign comparison looks at one placement from each person. A synastry comparison can consider several planetary placements and their angular relationships. The wider comparison asks a different question from a simple sign-pair description.

Imagine two people who share a Sun sign but have different Moon positions, Mercury positions and birth times. Sharing one label does not make their whole charts identical. Their histories, choices and communication habits are also different.

Begin with our Sun, Moon and rising sign guide if those terms are new. A familiar vocabulary makes the comparison less overwhelming, especially when the result table contains several pairs.

What information do you need?

  • Each person’s complete birth date.
  • Each person’s recorded local birth time, when known.
  • Each person’s actual birthplace, with region and country.
  • A consistent zodiac setting for the comparison.

Ask before using someone else’s birth details, and avoid publishing their report without permission. A playful chart activity does not require a public screenshot of private information.

If a time is unknown, preserve that fact. Do not choose a convenient time to unlock a more detailed result. Consult our unknown birth time guide before interpreting a partial chart. Missing data changes what can be responsibly compared.

How to use the free compatibility calculator

  1. Open the zodiac compatibility tool.
  2. Enter the first person’s date, local time and birthplace.
  3. Enter the second person’s own details; do not reuse the first person’s timezone as a shortcut.
  4. Check the selected method and any uncertainty messages.
  5. Generate the comparison and begin with one labeled aspect.

If a place name has several matches, select the right state or region. People born in different countries can have different historical clock rules. Our timezone guide explains why the local record should not be manually converted before a tool asks for it.

It may help to generate each individual free birth chart first. This gives you a chance to check each input and understand which placements belong to which person.

Reading a cross-chart aspect in plain English

A useful result identifies the first person’s planet, the second person’s planet, the aspect type and the orb. Read all four parts together. “Moon trine Venus” alone is incomplete when the direction matters to your notes.

A conjunction is centered on zero degrees of separation, a sextile on sixty, a square on ninety, a trine on one hundred twenty, and an opposition on one hundred eighty. The orb shows how far the measured separation is from the exact aspect angle.

AspectReference angleTraditional discussion prompt
Conjunction0°Where do these themes meet or become concentrated?
Sextile60°What could be developed through attention?
Square90°Where might different approaches need discussion?
Trine120°What may feel familiar or easy to explore?
Opposition180°Which different perspectives could be held together?

Those prompts describe interpretive traditions. The angle can be calculated; the prompt does not become a proven explanation of how two people behave. A square is not evidence of a doomed relationship, and a trine is not evidence that effort is unnecessary.

What does an orb mean in synastry?

Consider an invented example: two points are separated by 92 degrees. That is two degrees away from an exact square. If a calculator’s selected square orb includes that deviation, it may list the pair as a square.

Another tool might use a narrower rule or show different aspect types. Its list can therefore contain fewer rows without automatically using different planet positions. Compare settings before comparing counts.

A smaller orb means closer to an exact selected angle. It does not mean a correspondingly larger percentage chance of marriage, attraction or conflict. Precision in the angle should not be converted into invented precision in a relationship outcome.

Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars as conversation themes

Traditional astrology connects the Moon with comfort, Mercury with communication, Venus with affection and values, and Mars with action. Use these associations as invitations to talk about experience rather than statements that define your partner.

For a Moon-themed conversation, ask what helps each person feel supported after a difficult day. For Mercury, ask whether they prefer to talk through an issue immediately or take time first. For Venus, discuss what makes an ordinary week feel caring. For Mars, compare how you start projects and handle frustration.

The answers are useful whether or not an aspect seems to match them. Listening to the person has greater practical value than insisting that a placement must describe their behavior.

Why house overlays need reliable birth times

Houses depend on the chart’s time, place and house system. A claimed overlay can be misleading when a time is missing. A planetary sign comparison and a house overlay do not carry the same input requirements.

Astrojelly’s compatibility tool focuses on cross-chart planetary aspects. Do not assume it supplies every advanced synastry technique, a composite chart, a full house-overlay report or a traditional marriage-matching system. A clear list of what a tool does is more useful than a promise of every possible method.

For the difference between signs, planets and houses, read our beginner chart-reading guide. Keep the method labels alongside any saved comparison.

Unknown birth time and Moon uncertainty

The Moon moves enough during a day that a missing time can matter to both its sign and its aspect orbs. A noon-reference Moon is not a verified birth Moon. The same uncertainty can flow into a comparison involving that placement.

Our Moon sign without birth time guide explains how to keep multiple possibilities open. Do not claim a precise Moon aspect from an uncertain reference as though its birth degree were known.

What compatibility results cannot decide

A chart comparison does not establish consent, honesty, kindness, shared goals or emotional safety. It cannot diagnose someone, prove infidelity, or tell you that you must stay in or leave a relationship.

If a description feels uncomfortable, compare it with actual behavior instead of searching for another aspect to cancel it. If a description sounds flattering, do not use it to overlook behavior that concerns you. A symbol is not a substitute for evidence about how a person treats you.

Likewise, avoid “best zodiac match” rankings that imply every person in a sign pair has the same outcome. You can enjoy the cultural language of sign compatibility while making decisions from real conversations and circumstances.

A simple two-person chart activity

Choose one aspect together. Each person writes an example that seems relevant and an example that does not. Then discuss one small action you both want to try, such as agreeing how to communicate a changed plan.

Keep the exercise optional. Nobody has to agree with an interpretation to be understood. Our cosmic jelly motto for this activity is simple: bring a little wonder, leave plenty of room for the person.

Birth chart compatibility FAQs

Can the calculator show our soulmate percentage?

Astrojelly does not invent a soulmate or relationship-success score. Aspect counts are not validated probabilities.

Do incompatible Sun signs mean we cannot work?

No. A sign-pair label does not establish a relationship’s outcome. Look at actual communication and shared expectations.

Is synastry the same as a composite chart?

No. Synastry compares separate charts. A composite chart is a different technique; this guide and tool focus on the comparison.
