Astrojelly guide · Updated October 11, 2026 · Calculation methods and limits
First, generate a chart with consistent settings
Use your birth date, recorded local time and birthplace. Astrojelly's free natal chart generator defaults to the Western tropical zodiac and whole-sign houses. Check those settings before comparing a chart from another website: a different zodiac or house system can change labels without either tool being broken.
If your birth time is unknown, use the unknown-time option and leave the rising sign and houses out of your reading. A beautiful wheel should not distract you from an uncertain input.
Step 1: understand the three parts of a placement
Planet: the theme
For example, Mercury is traditionally linked with communication and thinking.
Sign: the style
A sign adds a symbolic style, such as Virgo's attention to detail.
House: the area
A house adds an area of life within the chosen astrological tradition.
These meanings are interpretive conventions. They are not a scientific test of your character. Think of them as conversation starters that need your real-life context.
Step 2: meet your Sun, Moon and rising sign
Your Sun sign is the zodiac sign containing the Sun at birth. Your Moon sign comes from the Moon's position. Your rising sign is the sign on the eastern horizon at that moment and place. Astrologers often call this combination the big three.
Read each separately before combining them. You do not need to make three descriptions agree perfectly. One might feel familiar, another might suggest a question, and another might not resonate. Your experience has more room than a three-word label.
Step 3: use the table alongside the wheel
The chart wheel makes the pattern visible; the placement table supplies the exact calculated values. Start with a single planet and find its sign, degree and, when the time is known, house. Nearby symbols can overlap on a small screen, so use the table when you need a precise value.
A value such as 15° Virgo describes a location within Virgo's 30-degree segment. It is a coordinate, not a strength score. Switching between wheel and square styles changes the presentation, not the underlying selected zodiac.
Step 4: add houses without mixing systems
In whole-sign houses, the entire rising sign is house one, the next sign is house two, and so on. House placements require a known birth time and location. Other systems, including Placidus, divide houses differently. Keep the house system visible when comparing reports.
As a hypothetical reading exercise, Mercury in Virgo in the third whole-sign house combines a communication theme, a detail-oriented style and a traditional learning or everyday communication area. It does not prove that someone will become a writer or pass a particular exam.
Step 5: read one aspect at a time
Aspects are angular relationships between planets. A conjunction is near 0°, a square near 90°, a trine near 120° and an opposition near 180°. The orb tells you how far a placement is from the exact angle. Astrojelly lists the aspect and orb so you can examine the geometry rather than relying only on colored lines.
Traditional readers use aspects to discuss how themes interact. An aspect is not automatically good or bad, and it does not establish that an event will happen. Moon aspects can be uncertain in an unknown-time chart.
Your five-minute first reading
- Confirm the birth details and calculation method.
- Read the big three with any uncertainty notes.
- Pick one planet and find its sign in the table.
- Add its house only if your time is reliable.
- Choose one aspect and write one open-ended reflection question.
Return to the same chart as you learn. You do not need to decode every symbol on your first visit. Our methods page and calculation-library documentation distinguish the astronomical calculation from the symbolic reading.
