A LITTLE CLARITY, EXTRA COSMIC CURIOSITY

Sun, Moon and rising signs

Three placements, three different questions. Meet your big three without squeezing yourself into three little boxes.

Astrojelly guide · Updated October 11, 2026 · Calculation methods and limits

What are the big three in astrology?

The big three are your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign, also called the ascendant. The first two are planetary zodiac placements. The third is a point on the local horizon. They are calculated differently, which is why a birthday-only list cannot reliably supply all three.

Astrojelly's birth chart generator shows them together when you provide a reliable time and place. Western results use the tropical zodiac. Compare a sidereal chart only after checking its different reference system.

Sun vs. Moon vs. rising: a quick comparison

PlacementWhat is calculatedTraditional theme
SunThe Sun's zodiac longitude at birthIdentity and self-expression
MoonThe Moon's zodiac longitude at birthEmotional habits and comfort
RisingThe zodiac degree on the eastern horizonApproach and first impressions

The themes belong to astrology's symbolic tradition. They are not scientifically established personality measurements.

How do I find my Sun, Moon and rising signs?

  1. Enter your full birth date, including the year.
  2. Use the local time on your birth record and double-check AM or PM.
  3. Choose the city where you were born. The city search fills its location and historical timezone.
  4. Keep Western tropical selected for a tropical big-three result.
  5. Generate the chart and read the three placement cards alongside the method note.

You do not need to know latitude or longitude for a normal city-based search. If your town is missing, look for it using the broader search or read the location note before choosing a nearby city. A precise horizon calculation depends on the actual birthplace.

Why is birth time especially important for the rising sign?

The horizon changes as Earth rotates. The ascendant can therefore change substantially during a birth day, and a small time difference matters near a sign boundary. Location also matters: two people born at the same instant in different places can have different rising signs.

There is no reliable birthday-only rising sign. If the time is unknown, Astrojelly omits it instead of presenting an attractive guess.

Can I find my Moon sign without knowing the time?

Sometimes a Moon sign stays the same throughout your local birth day; sometimes the Moon crosses a sign boundary. Use the unknown-time option and read the uncertainty information. A noon-reference degree should not be treated as an exact birth degree.

What if my three signs are different?

That is a normal chart pattern. There is no rule that your Sun, Moon and ascendant must share a sign or element. In traditional readings, different placements provide different perspectives rather than competing for one correct personality label.

For a gentle exercise, read the Sun theme and ask what you enjoy expressing. Read the Moon theme and ask what helps you feel comfortable. Read the rising theme and ask how you approach something new. Keep the questions that help; a description does not overrule your lived experience.

Why can two calculators show different big-three results?

First compare the date, time, AM/PM, birthplace and timezone. Then check whether one chart uses tropical signs and the other uses sidereal signs. Historical daylight-saving rules, uncertain records and placements close to boundaries can also matter. House-system differences affect houses; they do not turn one astronomical Sun longitude into a different tropical sign.

Read Astrojelly's methods and limits before comparing a professional Vedic result with our approximate sidereal option. If your inputs are uncertain, keep that uncertainty next to the interpretation.
